Wine Circle has just recieved a shipment of very impressive Loire Valley wines and the new vintages are looking very, very good.
One of the standouts so far is the Domaine du Margalleau Vouvray Sec 2009. Almost all who have tasted this one so far have commented on the quality of this release.
A bit of backgound first. Vouvray is a region in the Loire valley not far from Tours. This region is famous for it’s Chenin Blanc wines and these can be dry (sec), semi-sweet (demi-sec) or sweet (moelleux) or very sweet (doux).
Vouvray also makes some very impressive sparkling wines.
It is the largest Chenin Blanc growing area in France with only Anjou coming anywhere near the 2000 plus hectares planted.
Chenin Blanc has a natural high acidity which is balanced by the different levels of sweetness in the different styles. Because of this acidity these wines have great aging potential (the sweeter wines from good vintages will age well over a hundred years!). And even the Sec and demi-sec will be looking good in 15-20 years.
An interesting fact: In 2005 Decanter magazine put together a list of the 100 greatest wines ever made. A 1947 Vouvray from S.A Huet was at number 6. The only white wine above this was the 1921 Chateau d’Yquem!
Now on to Domaine du Margalleau. This producer has 26 hectares planted entirely in chenin blanc and produces all four varieties of Vouvray plus a sparkling wine. Jean Michel and Bruno Pieaux are the fourth generation from this family to be producing these wines.
The vineyard is south facing and sits on the edge of the Loire River and the vines are planted in soft soils known as Tuffeau.
The Domaine du Margalleau 2009 sec has a beautiful perfume of honey and fresh, juicy lemon which lifts from the glass. The palate is rich, fresh, textured and has concentrated lemon and honey flavours with a stony edge. The finish is very long and perfumed.
Call in to Wine Circle to pick this excellent wine up. It will definitely be a fantastic match for summer dining or enjoyed on it’s own.
